I am a huge believer in self talk but not the self talk that convinces you to believe lies about yourself. Or better yet, mental dialogue that convinces you someone is talking about you and/or doesn't like you. Here are 9 ways to defeat the giants in your life.
1. Ask God to direct and renew your mind
Prayer is one of the major keys to mind transformation. Sometimes spiritual attacks come to trick us out of our Godly inheritance but we must stand on God's promises that all things are working for our good.
2. Study and read your Bible
The Bible is a manual for life. It may have been written thousands of years ago but it will always be relevant. Inside the book are great keys of wisdom, education, edification, instruction, and revelation. And you can't just take someone else's word for what the Bible says but you must read and study it for yourself so that when battles come you have scriptures and the testimony of God's words to stand on and fight every battle that comes your way.
Look up scriptures on mind renewal. Google is a great resource to find scriptures. There are people who have done half the work on finding and posting scriptures of many topics online. Look some up, verify them for yourself, then write them on notecards or save them in your phone and pull them out when you need to remember what God has said about you.
3. Stop just thinking about yourself
I started this blog by saying self-focused thinking is not always good. There are definitely times when you should focus on yourself but when mind battles come you must turn to God. Sometimes, I literally have to stop, drop, and refocus. I tell myself, "If God said it then I believe it." I may not always believe it 100% of the time but I still speak God's affirmations over my life.
Negative words and thoughts must not be allowed in your mind and vocabulary. Throw away: "I can't," "I never will," "I will never have," "I'm not," etc. Change your words and your life will change. Instead of the glass being half empty, begin to see it half full.
4. Make Godly decisions
Sometimes mental warfare comes after the presence of sin. Conviction can park in our minds and we begin to believe the lies of the enemy so the key is to flee sin. Make good decisions! If you know something is wrong, DON'T DO IT! Run, jump, hurdle, or skip away from the presence of sin. Don't feel pressured into making a bad decision either. 1 Corinthians 10:13 declares there is always a way of escape so take the escape route.
5. Hang around positive people
Study the way positive people interact in life. Listen to their language, watch their life patterns, etc. and you will learn a few things. There are certain things they don't let into their atmosphere.
6. Take an internet, social media break and tv break
If comparison is an issue for you then shut social media and tv down for a minute. Stop looking at irrelevant, staged commentary and focus on what really matters in life. Sometimes things on tv and the internet are extremely valuable but other times you may need to reevaluate what needs your focus and attention. Do you have a business idea you want to pursue? Are you in school or want to go back to school? Are there life goals you have neglected because of fear, anxiety, or worry? Make a point to turn away from the electronics and get active.
7. Trust in God
Believe in God when he says you are free from sin and the accusations of the enemy. You are His child so even in the midst of hard times remember that hard times will pass soon.
8. Get physically active
Get some exercise! Physical activity renews our bodies and clears our minds. Your best bet is to get a minimum of 30 minutes of heart pumping exercise six days a week. According to brainhq.com, "Physical exercise helps to improve your mood because it increases the production of serotonin, a critical neurotransmitter found in the brain that is associated with good health and mental well-being. By increasing serotonin levels in the brain, exercise works as a natural antidepressant."
9. Repeat steps 1-8
Life is a journey that we will never perfect so we must practice good lifestyle habits daily in order to stay mentally strong. You may not hit the mark on each one everyday but the point is to do your best. Below are several scriptures you can memorize and study daily on the topic of mind renewal.
